Strawberry: "Fresa" or "Frutilla" in Spanish?

- Both words (fresa, frutilla) mean "strawberry", but its use varies according to the Spanish-speaking country. Read below.

Frutilla

- In some countries of South America, such as Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and Ecuador, the strawberry is known as frutilla.

Example 1:

Compramos frutillas en un mercado popular en Buenos Aires.

(We bought strawberries in a popular market in Buenos Aires.)

Fresa

- In Spain and and in other countries of Spanish America (except the countries seen above), the strawberry is known as fresa.

Example 2:

Estaban muy ricas las fresas que comimos en Barcelona.

(The strawberries that we ate in Barcelona were delicious.)
