Difference between "Cerrar" and "Serrar" in Spanish

Cerrar

- It has the same meaning of the English verb "to close, to lock, to turn off".

Example 1:

Debemos cerrar las ventanas antes de irnos a dormir.

(We should close the windows before going to sleep.)

Example 2:

Se recomienda cerrar las puertas con llave por precaución.

(It is recommended to lock the doors as a precaution.)

Serrar

- In English: "to saw (up)" (to cut with a saw).

Example 3:

Serrar la madera.

(Sawing wood.)
